Velvet Underground rock legend Lou Reed was booed off stage in Montreal when he played a free jazz set with John Zorn and Laurie Anderson.
Fans of Lou Reed and just jazz started booing almost from the start of his set some shouting out for the trio to play some "real music".
Sax player John Zorn responded:
"If you don't think it's music, then get the f**k outta here."
And so thy did with many people walking out of the show way before the end.
This could have perhaps been a case of 'know your artist' and read who is actually playing for John Zorn is one of the worlds most famous avant garde jazz musicians and Laurie Anderson is a performance artist who never holds her punches. Reed himself has been playing sets not of his Velvets period but of the infamous Metal Machine Music and had promised Montreal a "fearless night of non-rock" which would be "100% improvised".
Not all the audience found the gig poor and those left demanded an encore which they got. The mark of a true genius is not resting on past success and Lou Reed certainly is not doing that but always trying out new approaches even if it risks alienating fans of his old music.
