Serbian President Boris Tadic met with the representatives of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender organizations and expressed his support for the organization of the Gay Pride parade in Belgrade.

“It was agreed that the Gay Pride in Belgrade is to be a historical event which will show that Serbia is a safe society for all its citizens, regardless of their sexual orientations.” the President’s Office said in a statement.

The LGBT activists told Tadic about the everyday difficulties they are faced with due to their sexual orientation, and presented the work of their organizations.

In September 2009 the planned Gay Pride in Belgrade was called off after the police said they couldn’t guarantee for the participants’ security.

The safety concerns were raised due to the first gay parade in Belgrade in 2001 which ended up in a mass clashes after the participants were attacked by the hooligans, who protested against the manifestation.
