Richmond, California - Imagine: you are at home with a 4 year old and a baby (22 months old). It's a friendly neighborhood, so you leave you door open. In burst 2 aggressive pit bulls. As you grab you children and rush to the bedroom for safety, your little Chihuahua charges in to guard your escape. How noble is that?
That's what happened to Mayda Estrella of Richmond. The Chihuahua's name was Manchas. It was a truly gallant, successful but in the end fatal endeavor on the part of the little family dog. The family made it to safety. The little dog was grabbed in the jaws of one of the pit bulls, who carried it off. Manchas was killed.
Reports say the pit bulls escaped from a neighbor's yard by chewing through the fence.
When authorities arrived the pit bulls lead them to their owner. The owner, informed of the incident, refused to relinquish his animals. Authorities had no choice but to impound the dogs. The case is still under investigation. One report suggests the owner probably will not face charges.
Pit bulls do have a very bad reputation. They are in fact a highly intelligent animal. If you read about this dog's behavior and the myths and facts about this animal you will start to see that the aggressive behavior is something they learned. They like consistency and among dog breeds really do have a history of being kind, caring and loving pets.
But let's take our hats off to Manchas
