Woman in Veil

Paris, June 04: French police fined a Muslim woman for wearing an Islamic veil while driving, after initially mistaking her for a masked man, the second such incident as the country prepares to vote to impose a complete ban on wearing Islamic full-face veils by women.

Traffic police carrying out random alcohol tests, stopped a 23-year-old French national, on a road near the northern town of Maubeuge after initially mistaking her for a masked man, officials said.

But after being identified as a female, she was fined 35 euros ($43) for "driving with a reduced field of vision" as she was wearing the niqab a veil that leaves only the eyes exposed while driving.

The unnamed woman received her provisional driving license two weeks ago.

The incident came after a major political row erupted in France in April when a Muslim woman was fined in the western city of Nantes for driving while wearing a niqab. She accused the state of violating her human rights.

The latest incident came as French lawmakers prepare to vote later this year on whether to impose a total ban on wearing Islamic full-face veils, including the niqab and burqa, in public. Belgium has imposed a full ban on veils and in the Netherlands, there is widespread support for a law to ban veils. And, Switzerland recently voted to ban the construction of new minarets.
