Hanley’s tough play

Florida Marlins shortstop Hanley Ramirez was shown the bench by manager Fredi Gonzalez Monday night in the middle of a game against the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Diamondback Tony Abreu hit a looper that dropped near Ramirez in short left field. Ramirez accidentally kicked the ball approximately 100 feet into the left field corner, and then sluggishly ran to get it. He did eventually retrieve the ball, but by then Abreu had advanced to third, and two other runners had scored. The final score was 5-1, with Arizona snapping a Marlins four game winning streak.

The next inning, Gonzalez replaced Ramirez with Brian Barden, and confirmed to reporters after the game that Ramirez was benched for not hustling to get that ball. When asked if there would be further punishment for the costly error, Gonzalez stated that he thought the embarrassment of getting benched in the middle of a major league game was probably enough. When asked if Ramirez would be in the starting lineup in the next game of the series against Arizona, his response was "We'll see".

Hanley Ramirez was last year's National League batting champion, and is the highest paid player on the Florida Marlins. He signed a six-year contract for $70 million in 2008.
