After a 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit near the province of Aceh, Indonesia, a tsunami alert has also been issued. According to the USGS reports, the massive Aceh earthquake hit offshore, 214km (133 miles) south-east of the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. The depth of Aceh earthquake is reported to be of 61.4 km.
The Aceh earthquake site is very near to that of the place of the 2004 earthquake. In 2004, the earthquake set off the Indian Ocean tsunami in which approximately 220,000 people were killed. According to the reports by Indonesia's earthquake agency, the epicenter of the Aceh earthquake was about 66 km away from the south-west of Meulaboh district. The area of Meulaboh district is the one which was destroyed in the earthquake and tsunami on 26 December 2004.
The Aceh earthquake reportedly struck at 1259 (0559 GMT). Although, no news regarding destruction or tsunami have been confirmed by the USGS, however, the possibility of a local tsunami could affect the areas around 100km from the Aceh earthquake epicenter.
