The health care legislation will extend medical coverage to an estimated 32 million Americans

Ike warned about military industrial complex

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says the nation’s military, like the rest of the nation, must rein in spending.

Gates spoke Saturday at the Eisenhower President Library in Abilene, Kan. Eisenhower had warned the nation not to let the military industrial complex take over.

Army Times reported that Gates said health care costs are rising dramatically as are the costs of new weapons systems. He said providing health care to veterans is a “sacred obligation.”

Noting that typical annual spending increases are 2 to 3 percent, he said, “It is highly unlikely that we will achieve the real growth rates necessary to sustain the current force structure.” he said, noting that typical spending increases are 2 to 3 percent.

His estimates did not include the cost of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, which are likely to top $1 trillion a year by the end of 2010. The 2011 budget request for other spending is $550 billion.

“The goal is to cut our overhead costs and transfer those savings to force structure and modernization within the programmed budget,” he said.

On Friday, Gates urged the Congress not to give the military more than it asked for, the Washington Post reported.

The Washington Post also had an article today that had Gates appealing to Congress not to be that generous with military pay.

Through nine years of war, service members have seen a healthy rise in pay and benefits, with most of them now better compensated than workers in the private sector with similar experience and education levels.

Congress has been so determined to take care of troops and their families that for several years running it has overruled the Pentagon and mandated more-generous pay raises than requested by the George W. Bush and Obama administrations. It has also rejected attempts by the Pentagon to slow soaring health-care costs -- which Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has said are "eating us alive" -- by raising co-pays or premiums.

NOTE TO DEFENSE SECRETARY:
RE: Ways to cut military spending -
Stop using the US military forces as the galactic police force
Audit defense contracts for price gouging
Properly equipping troops will cut down on injury and medical costs

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY!!!!!
Reduce your won salary before cutting that of troops who protect you!

Given the danger and conditions that troops often face, they deserve good pay. It is the policies of engaging in wars that are misguided and often illegal that cause the financial problems and the costs associated with crooked contracts awarded to cronies and well connected corporations. Corporations benefit greatly too from the huge expenditures on military equipment and weapons.

Yeah, Ken, gotta agree with that.

I do also agree, the troops deserve, just take out the corruption and there will be enough money to pay for everything!

i am sorry but i have to say it is blood money. i read army times almost daily and used to regularly cover fort carson. $10,000 bonuses? full payment for college. i don't question the large insurance coverage. they started doing this when recruiters couldn't get even young people with poor prospects to enlist. even stop-loss didn't control the hemorrhaging. i am fighting like hell to keep my son out. or at least divert him to the navy or air force.
