Arizona spells out that racial profiling not allowed
In the wake of worldwide condemnation Arizona modifies immigration law
Although it has not received as much attention as the passage of the original immigration law, Arizona has made changes in the law.
Gov. Brewer signed a bill that specifically bans making arrests based on color, race or national origin, KVOA TV of Tucson reported.
"It says officers shall not use race, color, national origin as a reason for contact," said Pinal County Sheriff Babeau said. "This should satisfy everyone's concerns. There will be no racial profiling."
Brewer said, "People need to take a breath. They need to see just exactly what our laws actually say, and look at it realistically and read them and understand them. All this hype is unfortunate."
"They were on a cliff. They took a step back. But they're still on the ledge," said Tucson U.S. Rep. Raul Grijalva. He still believes the law will be thrown out because only the federal government can make laws on immigration.
"This law represents the most racist law in recent history," Garcia said. "It's anti-human, anti-constitutional, anti-civil rights in our country, and we will not stand for it,” said activist Isabel Garcia.
