The Wild Salmon of British Columbia, Canada need your help. A century ago you could almost walk across rivers full of sockeye salmon as they returned to the Fraser River each year. Creeks and streams from Alaska to Northern California once ran red with the yearly riot as the fish returned to spawn and die. They were the lifeblood of the indigenous peoples for untold centuries. Their numbers have dwindled dramatically over the past century as overfishing, pollution and industrial logging wreaked havoc on both their habitat and their population. In the last few decades there has been an explosion of industrial "Fish Farms" in bays and inlets up & down the coast of British Columbia. The "penned" fish have had terrible effects on the "wild" stock. They have introduced toxins and poisons into the aquatic environment they share with their wild cousins. They often escape their pens and introduce weak and faulty genetics into the already stressed wild fish. There have been huge disasters in Norway and Scotland where the presence of the fish farms killed off the remaining stock via disease and the growth of "Sea Lice" in the environment. Climate change with resultant warmer temperatures and lower water levels are also taking a toll on the remaining wild salmon.
The SALMON ARE SACRED organization has organized a march that began on Earth Day (April 22) that will follow the returning salmon down the Georgia Straight on Vancouver Island. They will stop in towns and villages in their journey from Sointula to Victoria to gain support for a petition to have the "Fish Farms" removed from the coves and bays they inhabit and be put in pens and ponds on dry land. They hope in this manner to save the wild stocks from further despoiling. The march will end with a Rally in front of the BC Legislature on May 8th/9th. It should be as colourful and abundant as the returning salmon once were!
