A French Mengele?

Michel Maure may go down as the most diabolical plastic surgeon in French history. Current facing 97 charges, the 59 year old physician went on trial this morning, accused of mutilating dozens of men and women. Maure, in response, has said that because he is one of the world's greatest cosmetic surgeons (he claims to carry out three hundred operations per year) the charges are obviously motivated by jealousy and greed.

If Maure did actually commit the crimes that he's accused of, what could possibly have motivated him? Did he commit them deliberately, or was he just incompetent? Right now, no one has any answers, except French investigators, who contend that Maure's clinic was so unsanitary that it poses immediate risks to anyone treated there. Even though that ought to be sufficient to shut a medical office completely down, it still does not explain why a physician of all people would carry out such crimes.

So, is Maure, quite possibly, a French Josef Mengele? If inflicting pain was his primary aim, then yes. Sadism would be something that Maure definitely has in common with the late Nazi physician. The fact that France could even produce people capable of performing such ghastly acts should be of serious concern.
