New Delhi: The UPA lead central government has been facing a serious problem in the mean time. The opposition party BJP had brought cut motion against budget 2010. The Loksabha had to be reconvenes over the issue at that time. The left parties, who are the bitter enemies of BJP in the political scenario of India had surprisingly joined hands with BJP in this cut motion issues. Mulayam Singh YadavMulayam Singh YadavMulayam Singh Yadav of Samajwadi Party (SP) and Lalu Prasad YadavLalu Prasad YadavLalu Prasad Yadav of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also declared their support to this cut motion. The congress lead UPA government had come into a thin majority over the issue and needed quality floor management in the Loksabha (Lower house) of Indian parliament.
The Shashi Tharoor - Lalit Modi controversy brought more difficulties to the leading congress party. Dr. Manmohan Singh, prime Minister of India were in the US for nuclear summit at that time and Pranab MukherjeePranab MukherjeePranab Mukherjee and A K Anthony, senior ministers of Indian cabinet had to handle the issue along with Sonia Gandhi, the congress President. They summoned Shashi TharoorShashi TharoorShashi Tharoor, a junior minister several times but kept decision pending till the arrival of the Prime Minister.
Pranab Mukherjee, the finance minister of India were under the attack of the entire opposition regarding the union budget 2010. The finance ministry said to inter-fare in Shashi Tharoor - Lalit Modi episode and the income tax department (Under finance ministry) conducted sudden raid in IPL offices. Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner were summoned and interrogated for several hours. This has created immense pressure on Lalit Modi and IPL. It is said in the political regime that this was a counter attack of the government to divert attention from the controversy of Shashi Tharoor.
The congress lead government was about to be successful by doing this. However, Sharad PawarSharad PawarSharad Pawar, central agricultural minister and senior leader of NCP (A major partner of UPA alliance) had given statement favoring Lalit Modi.
This has changed the scenario. Congress lead UPA had a thin majority in parliament in the issue of cut motion. The UPA government can not afford losing support of NCP and Sharad Pawar.
Government was also under attack of the opposition on Naxal issue (Dantewada incident). P Chidambaram, senior congress leader and Home Minister of India was under attack. launch of GSLV D 3 rocket was also partially faied in between. Government had nothing to boast off and under attack from all sides including the issue of price rise. It become very difficult for the UPA government to afford all these issues against them.
Lalkrishna Advani, chairman, BJP parliamentary commitee had declared that the Loksabha could not run before the resignation of Shashi Tharoor. The entire opposition sharpened their attack today. It was Sunday and the Loksabha had to reconvene on the Monday. Prime Minister had also returned home.
He consulted with his senior colleagues and Congress President Sonia Gandhi on this issue and finally took decision to ask for resignation of Shashi Tharoor.
