He was allegedly involved in corruption about IPL Kochchi team. He was accused of benefiting his girl friend Sunanda by misusing his portfolio. Lalit Modi, Chairman, IPL has accused him with the corruption charges.

IPL is a big game of money involved with in it. It is not only about cricket but also about money. Huge money is involved in this game and especially in this tournament. People have eyed on IPL as big source of money and business. It has become one of the biggest sports event in the world. Billions of dollars are involved in IPL. Ownership of IPL team has also become status symbol for Indian industrialists. Several industrial conglomerates including Mukesh Ambani (Reliance industries) and Vijay Malya (Kingfisher) have own their teams. Popularity of IPL has Increased interest of politicians in this tournament and its teams.

Recently, IPL has announced two new franchisees, that means entrance of two new teams in addition to eight old ones. Kochchi (Kerala) and Pune become two new destinations for IPL. The political debate started from here.

Narendra Modi, Chief Minister, Gujrat wanted a team for Gujrat (Ahmedabad). Adani, a business tycoon from Gujrat bidded for Ahmedabad team. It is told that Narendra ModiNarendra ModiNarendra Modi inspired him to do so. However, he was not successful in the bidding and Kochchi bagged it. This is the team from Kerala, a south Indian state. Shashi Tharoor, belongs to Kerala and had an interest in an IPL team of Kerala.

Lalit Modi, IPL commissioner said to be near and dear to Narendra Modi. He has an allegation on him of trying to support Narendra Modi in getting an IPL team for Ahmedabad. Kochchi team franchisee Rondezvos alleged Lalit Modi that he had offered $ 50 million to withdraw their team Kochchi in support of Ahmedabad. However, they were not agreed to do so.

Lalit Modi accused Shashi Tharoor of benefiting his girl friend Sunanda. Sunanda has got shares in Kochchi team valuing Rs. 700 million as per present valuation.
