Polish President Killed in Air Crash In Western Russia

Lech Kachzynski, the President of Poland, was killed in a plane crash on Saturday. Apart from him, many others, including the president’s wife and a high level delegation were also killed in this plane crash as they were on board the same jet. The plane crashed on the landing outside the Western Russian city of Smolensk. It was reported that the plane was a Tu-154 jet which crashed about a kilometer that was just near to the runway on its second attempt to land in heavy fog at the Smolensk-Severnyi military airport. This plane crash incident happened shortly before 11 a.m. Moscow time.

The number of killings in the plane crash is still not confirmed according to the reports. Polish officials put the figure of 88 dead and the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations said that the death toll was 97 whereas Russia’s Investigative Committee said that the total death toll is 132.

The plane crashed by striking trees and broke into pieces. Rossiya-24 television news network reported that there were no survivors in the plane crash. The Soviet-built Tupolev-154 jet which crashed was 20 years old.
