It was a horrible earthquake and it struck about 28 miles into the Earth’s crust under the Indian Ocean. 7.8 Magnitude earthquake which hit Sumatra Indonesia today was centered 125 miles northwest of Sibolga in Sumatra.

An initial report says that many people have been injured in this earthquake and further details will be provided later. Due to this earthquake the Australia and India Plates move north-northeast with respect to the Sunda plate at a velocity of about 60-65 mm/year. Data Bureau of Meteorology and Climatology and Geophysics said that Earthquake occurred at a depth of 34 km and the potential to cause tsunami waves. But tsunami warning was cancelled after 2 hours.

The head of police told it was a strong earthquake and it lasted for five minutes. This tremor shook the building and large towers. Head of the police on island said, “I’ve ordered my staff to check if there’s any damage or casualties, but apparently no damage reported so far.” According to another report no damage or casualties have been reported in the Sumatra Indonesia yet.
