Colonel Russell Williams, former Commander of 8 Wing, Canadian Forces Base Trenton, has attempted a jailhouse suicide this Easter Weekend.
Colonel Williams is accused of killing at least two women in the Belleville area. He is accused of killing Jessica Lloyd, 27, of Belleville and Cpl. Marie-France Comeau, 37, of Brighton. Cpl Comeau worked at CFB Trenton.
Williams is also accused of two home invasion sexual assaults in Tweed, Ontario.
According to sources in the Quinte Detention Centre in Napanee, Ontario, Williams wrote a suicide note on the wall with mustard. The incident occurred around 5 am on Saturday.
The sources said that the note stated that his affairs were now in order and that his feelings were too much to bear.
Knowing that he was being closely watched, Williams had stuffed the cardboard from a toilet paper roll and foil into the lock of the cell. He stuffed more cardboard and foil down his throat in an attempt to suffocate himself. Staff was able to break into the cell.
Staff was able to enter the cell and rescue him.
Apparently Williams had done a rehearsal the day before by jamming a pencil into the lock to see how long it would take staff to get in. It took them 15 minutes to break into the cell.
Colonel Russell Williams commanded one of the largest Bases in Canada. CFB Trenton is the staging area for all personnel and supplies moving in and out of Afghanistan. He was also responsible for staging the deployment to Haiti. The Disaster Assistance Relief Team was under Williams' command.
Colonel Williams will next appear in court on April 29th.
