Higher rate than most European countries
Amnesty International reports that more than two women die every day in the United States during childbirth.
About half of these deaths could be avoided if maternal health was available, easily accessible and of good qualify, an Amnesty report said.
Maternal mortality ratios have doubled from 6.6 deaths per 100,000 live births in 1987 to 13.3 deaths in 2006. Better data collection could account for part of the increase.
"This country's extraordinary record of medical advancement makes its haphazard approach to maternal care all the more scandalous and disgraceful," said Larry Cox, executive director of Amnesty International USA.
The U.S. rate is several times higher than most European countries.
