Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan still lives in the heart of millions. He died in the Mumbai terror attack on 26th November 2008. The attacks killed 179 people including Major Sandeep Unikrishnan.
At a glorious function at Thiruvananthapuram , capital city of Southern Indian State Kerala, Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan was given a posthumous award.
The Baby John Memorial award was presented by South Indian actor Mohanlal and it was recieved by Sandeep's father K.Unnikrishnan and mother Dhanalakshmi.
Just before the award was handed over to Sandeep's parents, the members in the audience lit candle lights and stood in silence for a minute in remembrance of the brave soldier.
Sandeep's father K.Unnikrishnan, in his reply speech said that Sandeep was much more than just a patriot. ``People generally talk of his role in the Mumbai terror attack, but Sandeep was always extraordinarily brave. He had told his mother than he would not let a soldier die before him. Years ago, he had brought back 14 soldiers without a scratch from the glacier-filled border, a great escape from the heavily armed Pakistan army,'' he recalled. ``I shall always be proud of him,'' he added.
Sandeep was their only son. He died when he was fought with terrorists. His bravery was honored with country's prestigious medal "Ashoka Chakra" on January 26th 2009.
