By kicking a 38-yard field goal at 5:53 in the first quarter of Super Bowl XLIV, Indianapolis Colts placekicker Matt Stover, 42, became the oldest player to score in a Super Bowl.

Before kicking the FG, Stover was already the oldest player ever to suit up for a Super Bowl. Prior to today, the oldest player to play in a Super Bowl was punter Jeff Feagles, then 41, who played in Super Bowl XLII for the New York Giants in their upset win over the then-undefeated New England Patriots. Stover is also the last 'original Brown' playing in the NFL. The 'original Browns' franchise became the Baltimore Ravens in 1996. Stover played for the Browns when they left Cleveland and became the Ravens.

Later in the first quarter, the Colts tied the longest scoring drive in Super Bowl history – 96 yards – to take a 10-0 lead. That was the high point for the Colts, however, as the New Orleans Saints outscored them from that point on en route to a 31-17 Super Bowl victory, their first.

George Blanda still holds the marks for both the oldest player to play as well as to score in the NFL. In 1976, at age 48, Blanda kicked a 48-yard field goal and made one extra point in a losing effort as the Pittsburgh Steelers defeated the Oakland Raiders in the AFC Championship Game.
