Some of my readers know that I carefully give out idiot awards. The process of selection is very exclusive, so I speak on behalf of hundreds and I carefully weigh deservedness.
Colin Roberts, UK's Director of the Overseas Territories at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office "FCO", is my pick for an idiot award.
The Turks and Caicos Islands had an unfortunate and unwanted take over by the UK government in August 2009, wherein the UK interfered with local government matters there. Because Turks and Caicos HAD its own constitution and self determination prior to the UK take over, many islanders are now eager to hold new local elections to move forward. The UK promised new election for July 2011 for the people when it invaded -- currently there is no democracy in the islands as it was taken by the UK.
Just when the local political parties were preparing for the upcoming conventions and elections, the UK confirmed that it will be making a selection process and now backing away from promises of elections in 2011.
This new announcement came from FCO's Colin Roberts quietly last Sunday when he visited the islands. Again on a weekend previously, Saturday November 12, 2009, Helen Garlick the UK's special prosecutor announced that is was the UK's intention to "have a permanent presence here. [Turks and Caicos]"
The people of Turks and Caicos are desperate for concrete answers and are tired of the UK double-talk. The people never voted for the UK take over nor did the UK Parliament. Why they are there and what they want from Turks and Caicos is not yet fully understood.
The UK is working with a local political opposition party who are known as thugs by the local population. The opposition party runs a satirical website called TCI Journal in the islands and is heavily criticised by the people.
Colin Roberts repeated "reform" over and over as a means to wrongfully occupy a country that did not and does not need the UK. The people of Turks and Caicos are sophisticated enough to take care of their own government and any stumbling along the way. It is alarming that the UK thinks that its own government is of a higher moral authority, particularly with regard to accusations of corruption. Just this week, members of parliament were ordered to repay illegal expense reimbursements.
The UK has yet to explain to the people why it secured a $85 million loan for the islands just to repay itself for millions in a corruption inquiry and "ongoing investigations." This is insulting to the people who never asked for nor voted on a UK inquiry or UK governance.
