Jyoti Basu, former Chief Minister of West Bengal and veteran communist leader passes away today. He was seriously ill during few day. He was kept under life support in Kolkata.

Jyoti Basu started his political career as communist activist and elected Chief Minister of West Bengal in 1977. It was the first time when communist party took over West Bengal. West Bengal witnessed a non congress Government only once before that.

CPI(M) and its allies, Left front, never lost any election in leadership of Jyoti Basu after he had taken over as Chief Minister. He remained Chief Minister of West Bengal till he himself decieded to quit on health ground. Buddhadev Bhattachrya succeeded him as Chief Minister and is still the Chief Minister of West Bengal.

United front offered Jyoti Basu to be the Prime Minister of India after Narasimha Rao of congress defeated in parliamentary election. The CPI (M) party did not allow Jyoti Basu to become Prime Minsiter of India. After years, CPI (M) acknowledged the decission as historical bloonder.

Left front in leadership of CPI (M) never lost any Assembly or Parliamentary election since 1977. It was only the parliamentary election of 2009 when CPI(M) were defeated badly by TMC-INC ally.

Jyoti Kothari is based in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, and is a Reporter for Allvoices.
