I have lived in this home for five years this November. I have never, in all my 29 years and ten months on this Earth, ever seen such a gathering of slugs in one place, over so long a time, in so many numbers. It is kind of beautiful...or gross. It might be just gross.
For some reason, this year became known as Slugfest at my house. My front porch, aged brick, is decorated with iridescent trails, like fairy tracks. It is quite beautiful. I have no explanation for their numbers, except perhaps the excess moisture from this years rainfall. Although some reports at the beginning of the summer had us receiving the correct rainfall for our area the timing was pretty well off, we had a wet autumn, and warm except for some period in October.
Warmth and moisture, I observed in my own garden, produced an alarming amount of slug activity. Serious cultivation to kill off remaining eggs that the cold temperatures won't take care of...if they ever arrive. Make sure you clear out your garden debris and move it to your compost pile.
Please note via comments your experience with slugs this year-any species, flora or fauna, that behaved out of season, or in quantities above or below what you normally observe. Please tell us what, where, and when, in this unscientific research data we will try and figure out if there is a why and how.
