Reaction to Obama

Political Commentary:

For the past few months now, we have all been witness to the plummeting approval ratings of our President Barack Obama - which have now dropped below 50%. Only 2 other Presidents have reached an approval rating below 50% quicker than Obama since WWII. On the two issues that are most important to the American people – keeping the country safe and the economy, people have soured on this President.

The wars in Afghanistan & Iraq as well as the continued high unemployment rates across the country have fueled much of this decline. Talk of raising taxes & enacting costly healthcare legislation in times of double-digit unemployment has not resonated with many Americans. Yet, despite all of these problems, the President has enjoyed the privileges of exclusive positive media coverage as well unconditional support from Blacks.

His approval rating amongst Blacks still remains in the high 90’s while his support amongst white voters has dropped 22% from a high of 61% to the current 39%. Some may read these numbers as affirmation that for the most part, White America is still racist. Others would argue that, Blacks simply will not criticize Obama because he is one of them & Black.

It is a curious & inexplicable phenomenon that is not easily explained. Why would 98% of the African American community still believe that their President is doing a good job on the economy and other domestic issues when the rest of the country sees a different picture? How far does the pride of having an African American President cloud the honest ability to honestly judge the performance of their Commander-in-Chief? How high does the unemployment rate amongst blacks needs to rise before blacks have a harsh word for Obama?

The unemployment numbers indicate that Blacks have been the hardest hit. In many categories, young male blacks have the highest rates of unemployment with some rates reaching as high 26%. In the states with the highest concentration of African Americans, the unemployment rates are all in the double digits. In Michigan, where Blacks make-up 14% of the population, the unemployment rate is at 15%. In the District of Columbia where 61% of the population is Black, the UE Rate is at 12%. In Florida where the Black population is 14%, the UE rate is 11%. These stats are repeated over & over for every state with a high African American population.

How is it possible then to reconcile the 90+ percent approval rating amongst blacks and the highest unemployment rates within the same group?

How are the issues of high unemployment, the safety of our country, ballooning budget deficits and increasing taxes not resonating with the African American community? Is there a double standard taking place? When Barack Obama won the election and became the first Black President of the US, African Americans rejoiced and with good reason and quickly proclaimed “ he belongs to us, not white people”. It was a moment that reinforced Black Solidarity and one of renewed hope.

But if we are to be fair, Barack Obama cannot be only your president for the positive accomplishments, he must also be yours for the negative as well. We can't give him an A everytime he does something positive and give Bush an F everytime he does something wrong.

To that respect, we must all be open & honest & stand up for the issues that affect all Americans. It is not only White Americans, Latinos or Asian Americans that need jobs. African Americans need jobs as well. It is not only White Americans that have sons & daughters fighting the wars abroad. Black American fathers & mothers have seen their loved ones put in the line of fire as well.

If we are to see this country regain its economic strength, we must have a concerted effort and honest discussions about our Presidents performance. Our President has been in office for close to a year already, and there is enough of a track record to judge him fairly. To have almost 100% approval from the African American community is not being honest to yourself or the rest of America.

Respected Sir!!
you indicate the number of problems whom Obama are facing nowadays!! But In my opinion these problems are created by the last President Mr. Bush. Whose wrong decisions and Policies were the major problems for your whole country!!
So don't protest again President Obama!! You have to protest again Mr. Bush

I'm sorry to heard that

African Americans continue to give solid support behind Pres. Barack Obama despite the high unemployment because we know that those same black folks would be unemployed no matter who was, is, or will be President. Also, allvoices is hilarious for having African American in their related people pictures. Go into the inner cities. Those black kids don't want to work. They want to stand on the corner and sell drugs to make their money.

ahol888,
I think I understand what you're saying, but is that really a logical reason to support Obama? What has Obama done for other people of color, other than use them a willing pawns in his political agenda? How is he any different than Jesse Jackson, Ralph Abernathy, Al Sharpton or any other unscrupulous leader who plays the race card for power and profit? Does he just have a better staff writer and personal media assistant?

Because of the situation you alluded to, isn't it logical, then to believe that blacks may very well be the most negatively affected by the health care boondoggle, and Cap & Trade, if they drive the economy even farther south?

Is it ever acceptable to overwhelmingly accept or reject anybody because of their race, predominantly because it's something that somebody has experienced themselves? I'm sorry... I honestly don't understand.

inamshah,

While some of the problems that plague our country today have been the result of Republican leadership, it should not exculpate of give the current president freereign to compound these problems. Specifically quadrupling the deficit in his first 100 days.

A President cannot continue to blame prior administrations he must provide tangible solutions.
For this he must be to blame. as it is almost a year inot his presidency already.

With all due respect - that's a very outside looking in picture you're giving and this article is right about way too many things.... INCLUDING the fact that Obama has not been truthful with ONE statistic since taking office. THAT is lying in case you can't catch my drift and no matter what Bush did - you blame him for the war... He did not cause the economic collapse - read history - research for yourself - the Democrats take a huge portion of the guilt for that.

Since taking office - Obama has made a claim "to do this" a claim "to do that" - said that the numbers would be this - then they are that...and then - ALMOST always they are revised to show a more dismal outlook.
You may love him - and that's great - Take him - he's all yours... We're getting tired of him blaming Bush for everything. It wasn't Bush who flew those planes into the Trade Towers, it wasn't Bush who passed the CRA, it wasn't Bush who repealed Glass-Steagall, it wasn't Bush who said Mae and Mac were "just fine" when people in his adminstration questioned the strength of their companies AND it was NOT Bush who made Obama lie to the American people.

Stop defending him and BE REAL - Obama can't lead this Country because he does not know how to accept responsibility for what HE does... and THAT doesn't fly with us no matter HOW much people in other countries love him.

I'm with you in this all the way...

inamshah,
Respectfully, why do you feel we need to choose between two idiots? Why can't we just protest both of them?

Agreed!

meowkittens,
Either you are or you aren't a racist, if criticizing the president is considered racist, that means every liberal and democrat would have to be a racist.

Racism is not a good trait. Really bad one.

firesisle, in black culture, the tradition is to support a black person in any endeavor no matter how corrupt or ineffective that he or she is. For example, look at all of the support for Michael Vick. Even though he killed all of those dogs in his dogfighting organization, he is mostly loved in the black community. It's never acceptable to accept or reject anybody because of race, but the black community overwhelmingly supports anyone who is black no matter what.

I think the people should stick with what they got at the elections, if they don't like Barack Obama they must wait for the next American general elections and for somebody else who will give them a much harder time. 28/11/2009.
