Paul Goes to the Party
Paul combed his hair. He put on his old coat. He had a fine new coat, but he loved the old one. His own cousin Walter had invited him to a party. Walter was very rich and Paul was very poor, but they were friends. Paul always had a good story to tell.
Paul walked fast because he wanted to get there early. “Then I’ll be able to eat all I want,” he thought.
Paul walked to the gate in the wall. He knocked on Walter’s door. A tall man came to the door. But he would not let Paul in! He thought Paul was not invited.
“Go away!” Said the man. “You can’t be a friend of Walter’s. All of Walter’s friends wear fine clothes.”
“But I am Walter’s cousin!” Paul cried. “Talk to him! He knows who I am!”
The man shut the door.
Paul walked down the street. “I know what to do,” thought Paul. He went home and put on his other coat. Then he walked back to Walter’s house.
The same tall man came to the door. He looked at Paul’s fine coat. He let him into the hall.
At the hall, Paul saw a table filled with good things to eat. He knew what he would do. He went to the plates and saucers on the table.
He put some lamb meat into one pocket of his coat. He put cake into the other pocket. He was able to fill all the pockets of the coat with food.
“Paul, welcome to the party! But what are you doing?” Walter asked. “Why aren’t you eating?
Why are you putting all the food into your coat?
“I have a story to tell you, Walter,” said Paul. “I came to your house, but I was not welcome because I wore my old coat. So I went home and put on another coat. When I came back wearing this fine coat, I was welcome.”
Paul went on. “When you invited me to the party, I thought you wanted me to come. I was wrong. You wanted someone in a fine coat. You really invited the coat. So I say let the coat eat!”
Walter thought a bit. He said, “I am sorry. You are my friend, not the coat. Come. Sit, eat, talk. Tell me and my friends another story. After all, a coat might eat, but it can’t tell a good story.”
