With no camera to capture the moment, former President George W Bush and Laura Bush went to Fort Hood, Texas Friday night to meet with wounded soldiers and family members of fallen soldiers.
Before his arrival on the base, the former President of the United States made a formal request that no publicity be made about his arrival on base to meet with the grieving families. The base obliged.
Thirteen people were gunned down and dozens wounded by a fellow soldier on the base in the deadliest massacre on a US military base in history. The visit by the former President and his wife was a genuine act of kindness. No one can deny this. The former President Bush and his wife arrived and spent several hours with the wounded victims and the families as well as the soldiers on base.
He did not seek publicity, and he came in went in the dark of night with one mission: To grieve with the families of the fallen.
It was said there was great compassion from the former President to the troops and that his visit was very warm and welcomed by the families and soldiers of Fort Hood.
The couple had come and gone before word that the two had visited the base made it to the media.
In contrast, President Obama has drawn criticism from a great many people on both the national as well as international front for his handling of the tragedy. Obama was doing what he does best – giving a speech, when the news of the massacre had reached him. Speaking to a crowd of Native Americans in a rather cheerful and rousing voice, it was minutes into the speech that he stopped to acknowledge the massacre.
A major newspaper in the United Kingdom referred to the President's reaction as “mechanical” and stated if “he experiences passion, he seldom shows it.” Further scornful of the President, the Telegraph went further stating what was missing in [President Obama] was “the eloquence that Mr Obama employs when talking about himself. Absent too was any sense that the President empathized with the families and comrades of those murdered.”
Even the extremely liberal Boston Globe criticized the President stating in an editorial: “It takes more than scripted eloquence for Presidents to connect with fellow Americans. It requires a visceral ability to grasp the scope of tragedy, calculate its impact on the national psyche, and react swiftly. Obama missed the first moment to show he understood how much it hurt.”
President Bush has taken a lot of heat since leaving office – especially from the current President.
Obama has said he will bring hope and change to this nation.
When President Bush drove from his home to the base of Fort Hood, he showed a compassion for the soldiers of this country that the current President has yet to demonstrate.
President Obama has maintained a cool and arrogant front to the people of this nation and never was it more apparent then after news of the tragedy at Fort Drum was released.
The American people, and especially the troops and families of Fort Drum deserve more than they received from their Commander in Chief Thursday.
This week, Obama will attend services on the base at Fort Hood. With camera in tow, he will speak to the victims, their families and military personal at the base.
President Bush on the other hand, didn't need a press camera to address Fort Hood....He just needed his car.
