UPDATE: Haye (David) Wins! Victory by decision. Upset.
David vs. Goliath. Okay, okay David vs. Nikolai but he looks like Goliath to me.
The World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight championship gets a test tonight in Nuremberg, Germany of all places.
The defending champion 7-foot, 2-inch Nikolai Valuev,36, plans to protect his 50 wins against 1 loss record and a challenge by opponent David HayeDavid Haye, the Brit.
The size difference has little effect on Haye’s loquaciousness.
"The combination of my hand speed and Valuev's immense head is going to cause an explosion. This is my chance to make history," Haye told a group of reporters gathered for pre fight publicity.
"I've dreamed of the moment Valuev falls to the canvas and I truly believe it will be one of the most jaw-dropping knockouts of all time," the 29-year-old Haye added.
Touting a 22-win record – 21 by knockout – Haye’s words don’t seem to effect the “Beast of the East.”
"His comments have been very motivating," said Valeuv of Haye's pre-fight trash-talk.
"But let's see what Haye has to offer inside the ring. I don't think he will be able to follow it up. But I will not under-estimate him."
Valuev tipped the scales at 315.9 lbs, while Haye weighted in at 218.
"Some people think I'm crazy -- there is a big gulf in size, but I've got something up my sleeve and you're going to be amazed on the night," Haye told CNN.
The host city, Nuremberg, is the city where between 1945 and 1946, German officials involved in the Holocaust and other war crimes were brought before an international tribunal in the Nuremberg Trials.
Will David be able to slay Nikolai? He sure thinks he can.
“I will knock out champion Valuev” Haye promised.
