I'm not truly sure how one can be a farmer! As if the high cost of doing business, the challenge of fanatical environmental groups, and working from sunup to sundown 7 days a week, farmers are truly at the mercy of Mother Nature, and are living proof that man has no control of the elements around him!
We have watched harvesting equipment sit idly by in sheds and at the edge of fields for weeks now as the rain and snow fell and the temperatures were 10 to 20 degrees below normal! In short, it's been miserable for farmers and for those of us who used to live on a farm as well.
The months of September and October were more like December and January, and now suddenly in early November the weather has turned to late September! As I write here in Southwestern Minnesota, high temps are in the 60's with bright, sunny skies and very little wind! And believe me, the only ones complaining are the deer hunters, and even then, I don't believe they are having too much trouble with the weather today! There's a lot of corn still standing, and that means the wily whitetail deer has a lot of places to hide from hungry hunters!
Farmers are doing a tough job of feeding the country, and feeding the world. Did you know the average farmer feeds dozens of people around the world all by themselves?! Harvest is progressing, and I hope you take time to think about the fact that because they succeed, we get to keep enjoying food at the dinner table with the family! Bon Apetit!
