Chris Brown's statement

Chris Brown released a statement to MTV today, responding to Rihanna's tell all interview with Diane Sawyer that has revealed the details and motivation of his February 8 felony assault.

"While I respect Rihanna's right to discuss the specific events of February 8, I maintain my position that all of the details should remain a private matter between us," he said in the statement. "I do appreciate her support and wish her the best. I am extremely sorry for what I did, and I accept accountability for my actions. At this point, I am taking the proper steps to learn about me and grow from my mistakes. I only hope that others in similar situations can learn from our experience as well. Abuse of any kind is always wrong. The rest I leave it to God."

While Chris Brown has avoided explaining the details of the assault in his interviews with Larry King and MTV correspondent Sway, Rihanna completely opened up in a three part talk with Diane Sawyer.

It is today's segment of Rihanna's "Good Morning America" interview with Diane Sawyer that prompted Chris' response.

Rihanna gave Diane her account of what happened in the car after the former couple left Clive Davis' annual Grammy party.

Rihanna revealed that Chris received a text message from another girl and when she confronted him about it, he lied. As they argued about the text message, the exchange escalated into Chris' violent outburst.

As Chris was beating Rihanna, she said she was hoping he would stop. "That's all I kept thinking," Rihanna said. "When is it going to stop. When is it going to stop."

Rihanna said that Chris looked as if he had blacked out while he was hitting her. "He had no soul, just blank," Rihanna said. "There was no person when I looked at him."

Rihanna said her only option for getting home was to walk. "I was bleeding. I was swollen in my face," she said. "My next option was to get out of the car and start walking in a gown and a bloody face."

The rest of Diane's interview will air tonight on "20/20." Rihanna will share more details of the incident.

Rihanna's emotional account of the ordeal will clearly spark further backlash for Chris.

Chris has had some detractors since the attack, but those numbers are going to increase now that the victim has come forward and shared her account of what transpired.

In order for Chris to get past this tragedy, he needs to uphold what he claims in the statement. He does not need to engage in his own candid interviews in an attempt to get back at Rihanna.

He simply needs to be apologetic, and to uphold his court orders of probation, community labor and counseling.
