Asif Ali Zardari, President of Pakistan, is facing a political solitary as N.R.O. (National Reconciliation Ordinace) introduced by former President Pervez Musharraf is not only opposed by opposition and Media but also from important coalition partner MQM.
Through NRO , President Zardari got his cases closed which were prepared on political adversity by Nawaz Sharif Government in 90’s decade and none of case was proved in court of law. Supreme Court of Pakistan, a few weeks earlier, advised Parliament to decide the fortune and legality of this infamous ordinance. Due to strong opposition from every corner of civil society government could not bring this ordinance in parliament for discussion and approval. Now, President Zardari is under severe pressure and criticism is gradually increasing on him to leave presidency.
What would be the next step from President Zardari – nobody knows – but in the opinion of political analysts, various options exist for his consideration:
1. Forget NRO forever and face the cases in court.
2. Leave Presidency and exile abroad and lead party from there.
3. Bring NRO in a new shape and fight for it.
4. Transfer key powers to parliament, go in background and wait for a
suitable time for more stronger role..
5. Form a comprehensive national government, give every party a share
in power to minimize opposition and then again try out NRO on
appropriate time.
There may also be some other options but the most important thing is the thinking of “major player of power game” in Pakistan. Some differences were noticed on the issue of Kerry-Lugar Bill but due to ongoing successful operation in northern areas against militants, Mr. Zardari may have an opportunity to get its credit and for that matter option 4 will be the most suitable way to get rid of this solitary.
