FORT HOOD, Texas - In the worst mass shooting ever to take place at an American military base, Police Sgt. Kimberly Munley made the split second decision to put her life at risk. She was able to take down Major Nidal Malik Hasan, the psychiatrist who went on a murderous shooting rampage at the army base in Fort Hood, Texas on Thursday.
It's highly probable she saved many more lives and injuries with her fearless, heroic actions. She remained calm and was quick in the face of danger. In less than five minutes, at least 42 people had been shot. Thirteen of them died.
Only three minutes after Hasan, 39, started shooting his fellow soldiers, the 34 year old mother of two tracked him down. Chuck Medley, Director of Emergency Services at Fort Hood said, "She fired on him twice and drew the attention toward her. He immediately spun around and charged her. She fired a couple of more rounds and fell back, continuing to fire."
Munley was hit in both legs and wrist during the exchange of bullets. After she shot him in the upper torso, the Fort Hood killer went down.
Munley, a civilian cop employed by the Army is recovering at the hospital. One of the bullets hit an artery and she lost a lot of blood. She's not taking calls for comments, but she was doing well enough to take a few calls from friends and family.
Hasan was seriously wounded and remains in a military hospital.
