The Beverly Hills City Council has moved closer to approving an ordinance banning the controversial practice of declawing animals, which the mayor described as barbaric. The five member council approved the measure unanimously at Thursday night's meeting. A final vote is scheduled for Nov. 17.

The council approved the legislation in advance of the enactment of a state measure, which prohibits municipalities from banning the procedure beginning Jan. 1

“The city council is proud to take the lead in protecting animals against this barbaric procedure,” said Mayor Nancy Krasne. “Beverly Hills has a long-standing reputation as a community which supports animal rights and this legislation furthers our commitment to safe-guarding animals.”

On Friday, the Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a similar ordinance. A final vote on the ordinance is scheduled for Nov. 17.
