According to new research, children who drank highly sweetened liquids at age 5, such as fruit juice, soda, and/or sports drinks were more likely to have higher body fat percentages in the next 10 years of their lives.
And having higher body fat percentages during the teen years has been linked to long-term weight issues and other health issues, such as diabetes.
The study looked at over 150 girls between the ages of 5-15. They found that those who had at least two sweetened drinks a day as a young child were more likely as teenagers to have higher percentages of body fat, weigh more, and were more likely to be overweight than girls who drank lesser amounts of such beverages.
Those who only drank milk or juice made from 100% juice did not show the same increased levels in body fat as they grew older.
Experts say that parents and caregivers should limit sweet drinks and focus on reduced-fat milk, water, and 100% fruit juice instead.
