Angela Merkel, the Chancellor of Germany, said that she was relaxing in the sauna when the Berlin Wall fell on 9th November 1989. She was a 35-year old physicist in Eat Germany at the time and the day happened to be a Thursday. It was the day of the week she had set aside for her sauna bath. She had carried on with her routine activities as if nothing extraordinary had happened or was about to happen. After the sauna, she had a beer with one of her friends and walked over leisurely late at night to have a look at the debris. The West Germans were giving 100 Deutsche Marks to the East Germans as ‘welcome money’ and she used hers on practical goods unlike many who used it to buy consumer goods.
