Because of finatual concerns, and a lack of volunteers the Humane Society of West Texas also known as HSWT. Has Frozen intakes on all new animals until further notice. This can be frustrating to local people who try and help lost, and abondon animals in the Lubbock area.
The local animal control is also part of the problem thay can take several hours to respond to stray animial calls even when the stray is reported to be agressive. I personally have never had Lubock animal control respond to a stray animal call under 1hour time. Usually it is 3-4 hours even during typical business hours for them to respond. Plus, the city of Lubbock has had money for years to biuld a new shelter but have been dragging their feet on finding a place and getting the shelter started for years. That is why Lubock has one of the highest kill shelters in the United States.
Local animal lovers help by volunteering with local no kill shelters and the HSWT. Also some work independently to rehome animals that they find because they do not want to sentence them to almost certain death at the Lubbock shelter. I currently foster animals for the HSWT which doesn't have a shelter but adopts out 100's of animals a year all of which are fostered in a home setting which is better for the animal. But also restricts the number of animals we can help because it is completely volunteer run.
