Are Democrats spending themselves out of a job?

If you are a Republican, you probably woke up on Wednesday feeling pretty good about things. The Democrats having run the show for the past year, Tuesday night's marked shift in Party designees was inarguably telling of politics to come. And if you are a Democrat in Congress, dollars to donuts says your healthcare vote just got a whole lot harder. So what do all of Tuesday's election results say about the impending 2010 Election?

Chris ChristieChris Christie electrified the Republican Party when he declared victory over Democratic Incumbent John Corzine of New Jersey. President Obama campaigned for Corzine on five separate occasions. For that reason alone, the Democratic Candidate's resounding defeat seems to have said as much about the waning clout of the President as it most certainly has about the less than promising future of the Democratic Party. In Virginia, McDonnell was one of three Republican victors. In addition to his gubernatorial victory, Virginia Republicans seized hold of both the Lieutenant Governor and the State Attorney General’s slots. With an astounding Republican sweep the party appears more poised than ever for a 2010 rebound. And though disappointed by Doug HoffmanDoug Hoffman's loss in New York, Republicans ought to be encouraged by the thin margin with which Bill OwensBill Owens claimed victory. Indeed, they should be proud. They stood up in defense of the most basic of American principals, principals of limited government, private property and free market economics. They made their rejection of the nanny state known and in doing so, sent a very clear message to the Washington Elite of both political parties.

There are few who genuinely believe Tuesday's results won't adversely affect the Democratic Party’s ambitions for sweeping change in the healthcare sector. With countless Democrats up for re-election, time will determine whether many Democrats are as dedicated to a single payer system as they are to another term. The President is in an even more precarious position. A powerful surge of limited government energy from the Right combined with a militant doggedness for collectivism on the Left has manifested into a virtual rock and hard place for the Obama White House. Already having frustrated his base by ‘dithering’ on key campaign promises, the president is now faced with an impending healthcare reform bill that will only satisfy the Progressive Left should it include a sturdy public option. But after last night's results, there is no denying that any additional growth in government or tax rates will almost certainly guarantee a Democratic defeat in November 2010. So which pressures will the President succumb to? Will the Democrats ever become conscious of the fact that a continued attack on the American taxpayer will serve only seal their fate in 2010? Never mind the impact it will have on our already troubled economy. They are, quite literally, spending themselves into oblivion.

The Democrats would be wise to reflect on the events which led to the results of Tuesday’s election. Unlike the opaque enthusiasm that helped usher Obama into the White House, voters such as those who petitioned for the more conservative candidate in New York championed a definable ideology. Lacking any business experience whatsoever, Republicans insisted then Candidate Obama was not up to the job in 2008. Indeed, Barack ObamaBarack Obama stills seems to believe a country can be run on the energy of lofty speeches and ACORN style intimidations. The Obama Administration may have been able to lure the youth of America to the 2008 polls with his supercilious oratory but it would appear most of those same voters were not even aware Tuesday 2009 was host to another election. That’s the danger of rhetoric. Its impact is fleeting. When you petition for support on the basis of sincerity, specifics, depth and wisdom, you don’t need a Roman Parade to inspire voter participation. It just goes to show that when the smoke has dissipated, the mirrors have lifted, the Greek Columns have been leveled and the movie stars have gone back to their narcissistic ways, most everyone who cast their vote in honor of a good speech and an MTV infomercial were gone home as well.
