This evening while flicking to the local t.v. channels,I was pleasantly surprised to catch a live coverage of the proceedings of the National Assembly direct from Islamabad on the national t.v. channel(P.T.V.)
The Speaker was patiently hearing the members voice their views about various the pressing grievances, one of them being the 'sugar crisis'.They were assured by the concerned minister who tried to deal with the queries as best she could.
Then to my utter surprise a member asked if a list of names of the defaulters who had not paid back large amounts of loans to banks could be supplied to the members. The offical concerned said they could be found in the library of some office and he asnwered very vaguely.Upon hearing that, another member demanded that those people who borrowed millions and had later managed to get not only the interest but the actual amount waived off should be exposed and be brought to book.He went on to say that these people were like cancer in our society and had filled their treasures with the money of the public. They had taken money out of country and converted it and put in foreign banks. The other members banged their desks in appreciation.
Another member continued talking about the same topic and said that all the money borrowed from banks if returned would be more than sufficient for the country's much needed badly hit economy. He further stressed that we wouldn't need the much debated Kerry-Lugar 1.5 billion as more than that amount would be gotten back from the defaulters. One member also wanted to know who were those who would benefit if the NRO bill was passed by the house.
All this took place this evening and the Prime Minister,Yusuf Raza Gillani was present in the House.
It is hoped that the Top Minister concerned sees that action is taken and the defaulters are made to pay back the enormous loans that were taken ASAP.
