"China is one of the most dynamic, exciting and important countries in the world, and this approval marks a very significant milestone for The Walt Disney Company in mainland China," said Robert A. Iger, Disney president and CEO, on Tuesday.

The Chinese government has approved a preliminary association between Disney and a coalition of Shanghai partners. The consolidated group now plans to proceed toward a final agreement and begin development work, according to a Disney press release.

The potential site has been named in the Pudong district.

Preliminary plans include the signature Magic Kingdom-style park while incorporating characteristics of the Shanghai region.

But with offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, this project will be the first Disney compound on the mainland.
