With the deaths of five U.N. staff members still looming over the heads of U.N. government officials, it appears that an executive decision has been made to pull out 600 of its nearly 1,100 international staff that currently resides in Afghanistan. With security deteriorating by the minute within the walls of Afghanistan, the U.N. is not willing to take a chance at any more innocent blood shed thanks to the Taliban. The 500 or so remaining staff members that are not evacuated will reportedly be moved to safer locations within Afghanistan.
With the recent election of President Karzai now official, most expected Afghanistan to either unite or fall apart. At this current moment it seems as if all the hard work that has been done by the United States and United Nations is for nothing. President Barack ObamaBarack Obama publically announced his displeasure for what he saw as major hit to the progress that was being taken. Officials wanted to make clear that in no way, shape or form does this evacuation of staff members mean that they are giving up on Afghanistan, but rather are simply taking precautions to spare potentially killings in the future.
With security being the clear cut problem encompassing Afghanistan, many fear that these recent killings may persuade the American president to send in the additional troops that were requested by his top military officials on the ground some weeks ago. Last week at a U.N. building several Taliban suicide bombers entered with explosives hidden underneath there police jackets, which ultimately sparked this grave concern for increased security. With so many unknown factors still remaining in Afghanistan, the not too distant near future may ultimately tip the direction in which the war will go. I think I speak for most of the world when I say let’s get the hell out of there!
