In his second foray to China, American Nick Watney scorched the Sheshan International Golf course with a course record 8-under par 64 to lead a 78-man field Thursday during the World Golf Championships (WGC) in Shanghai, China.
"The greens are so good that if you hit a putt on line, it's definitely going to go in," Watney responded after his round. "I was putting very well. Just tried to give myself as many chances as possible and I was able to make a few."
The group two shots back include Ryan Moore of the US, Shane Lawry of Ireland and Martin Kaymer of Germany for the $7 million event.
The Chinese spectators enjoyed the charge of Lin Wen-tang of Taiwan, who joined Tiger Woods, Anthony Kim and Paul Casey three back.
Generally, photographs are not allowed during tournament play. But, rarely do 15 of the World’s top golfer appear on the Asian continent. That novelty created some photograph taking.
Not use to cameras on the course, Woods shanked his 3-wood tee shot on the first tee. His ire was evident as he dropped the club and impact, hitting the ball short and right.
"The guy in the grandstand basically did almost a photo sequence," Woods steamed to a reporter later.
Despite Woods aversion to photo-in-mid-swing, he handled it better than others.
Phil Mickelson started hot before cooling and settling for a 69 – five shots back. The Defending champion Sergio Garcia recorded a 75.
Sean O'Hair made sure that half a world away the World Series still was on his mind. Although a Philadelphia fan, O’Hair kept track of the development in New York.
Watney meanwhile expressed his love of coming to the international stage and playing in China.
"The coolest thing about golf is being able to travel all around the world," Watney said. "And to get this opportunity to come here and then back to Hong Kong."
