As President Obama escalates diplomatic talks with the state of Iran over efforts to get the controversial theocracy to abandon its pursuit of nuclear weapons, Iran has been caught red-handed by the state of Israel attempting to ship over 500 tons of rockets and other armaments to the state of Syria. If these ammunitions, labeled as construction materials on the ship’s manifest, would have reached their port of entry, they would no doubt have found their way into hands of the Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.
Coming in the midst of the Obama administration’s efforts to broker a deal to have Russia supply Iran with the enriched uranium necessary to fuel Iran’s nuclear power needs, it’s clear that leadership of Iran does not have much concern for any repercussions or fall out from the United States and its European allies involved in the negotiations over uranium.
Even more troubling is the fact that this incident suggests that, as many Middle East experts have suggested, Iran will not deterred from its nuclear weapons ambitions or its efforts to sow the seeds of Israel’s destruction through terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah.
Unfortunately for the state of Israel and its allies, President Obama seems to believe that the power of his persuasion will somehow convince committed state sponsors of terrorism like Iran to put down their arms and take a seat at the peace conference. But even as the interception of the arms by Israel was announced today, Iran was staging a state-sponsored celebration to mark the anniversary of Iran’s taking of the U.S. Embassy and hostages.
If President Obama wants to avert a nuclear calamity in the middle-east, his administration will need to deal more forcefully to disrupt Iran’s efforts to weapon-ize terrorist groups throughout the world and consider actions which will encourage Iran to be significantly more cooperative.
