H1N1 Virus

A 13-year-old indoor cat has a confirmed case of H1N1, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS). They remind the public that people who are sick with H1N1 can spread the virus not only to humans, but also to some animals.

"Two of the three members of the family that owns the pet had suffered from influenza-like illness before the cat became ill," said IDPH Public Health Veterinarian, Dr. Ann Garvey. "This is not completely unexpected, as other strains of influenza have been found in cats in the past."

Both the cat and its owners have recovered from their illnesses.

The cat tested positive for the H1N1 virus at the Lloyd Veterinary Medical Center at Iowa State University's College of Veterinary Medicine. The diagnosis is the culmination of collaborative efforts between IDPH, Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Center for Advanced Host Defenses, Immunobiotics and Translational Comparative Medicine, USDA, and IDALS Animal Industry Bureau.

People can keep their pets healthy by washing hands, covering coughs and sneezes, and minimizing contact with their pets while ill with influenza-like symptoms. If your pet exhibits signs of a respiratory illness, contact your veterinarian.

"Indoor pets that live in close proximity to someone who has been sick are at risk and it is wise to monitor their health to ensure they aren't showing signs of illness," said Dr. David Schmitt, State Veterinarian for Iowa.

Yes, I had heard this story - and it has also been proved (ironically) that humans have given hogs (yes, pigs) H1N1 flu. Just think how upset that Swine is that contracted a virus from a human....

Very interesting! Poor piggies. And then there's this factoid:
With nearly 17 million pigs in the state, there are far more pigs in Iowa than people.

Why did people give this article 3 thumbs down? Do they not agree with medical evidence? lol

Yeah, I was wondering the same thing. Maybe other AV contributors are envious of the high page views. I gave it a thumbs up, because it's interesting and unusual news. I for one, did not know the virus could be passed on to pets.

Great information, Billie. I didn't know animals could catch it either--pets or pigs!

Well isn't that just the cat's meow!

Glad to hear that both the cat and the people recovered.

Wow, I didn't know something like that was possible. I'm glad the cat and respective family members have recovered.

Billie - good info - I have a cat and a dog (who is 2 and just has 6 mast cell tumors removed) so this is really good information. I would NEVER have guessed this. - Thanks for passing it on...

Antonia and Dragonfly - the arrows are something that all of us wonder about... a LOT!! Some people just give a down arrow out of spite I think and it's because of that I would imagine Billie doesn't pay them too much attention anymore! :)

@Delilah, Punditty, hmkoct5, and Write4Life--thanks for reading and commenting. I'm glad all are recovered too. And the info in this report surprised this Iowan, too. It's the first case I've heard of a pet with H1N1. Good to know.

RE: the arrows (@Antonio, Dragonfly & Write4Life) When this report was first up, the number of "down" arrows were fairly equivalent to the "up" arrows. Antonia was wondering about that at that time. I wasn't sure either, because the raters did not leave any specific feedback.

Great article with a different twist. People often worry about animals giving them diseases, but this proves the reverse can also occurr.

Very interesting story! Poor cat. I know that HIV mutated from being passed from species to species. For instance, the new strain of HIV they found in the woman from Africa was from a mutation. I wonder now that the cat has it will it mutate into another form of flu? I'm no doctor....just a concerned citizen.
