PHOENIX, Arizona - Noor Faleh Almaleki, 20, died after clinging to life for almost two weeks. Police say her father, Faleh Hassan Almaleki,48, ran over his daughter because she became "too Westernized." He is in jail charged with two counts of aggravated assault. He now will likely face a murder charge.
County prosecutor Stephanie Low stated before the judge, "By his own admission, this was an intentional act and the reason was that his daughter had brought shame on him and his family." Low said Almaleki's death was an honor killing.
On October 20, the young woman was walking through a parking lot in Phoenix with her boyfriend's mother, Amal Edan Khalaf, 43, when her father gunned the engine of his SUV and ran over both women. Khalaf was hospitalized, but her injuries are not life threatening.
After the accident, the father fled to Mexico. He then boarded a plane for Britain where the police put him back on a plane to Arizona.
Relatives told reporters that Almaleki immigrated with his family in the mid 1990's. He made his daughter marry a man in Iraq. She defied him by returning to Arizona to live with her boyfriend and his mom.
