New York City has started to hum about the prospect of the Yankees closing in on another Major League Baseball Championship tonight, scheduled for television broadcast at 7:57 pm eastern.
The question remains whether or not Superman Chase Utley and his band of Philadelphia Phillies have the talent, the moxie or the cahonies to stave off the Evil Empire.
Pitching has been the real story during this clash with superlative efforts by the aces of both squads.
Tonight, Yankees’ 16-year, post-season veteran Andy Pettitte goes on 3 days rest showing an all-in gamble by sophomore coach Joe Girardi. In the playoffs, Pettitte seems better than the regular season numbers on short rest, with a 3-1 record and a 2.80 ERA in five playoff starts.
Former Boston nemesis, Pedro Martinez serves the pill for the Phillies tonight, well rested and probably still miffed from the earlier loss during this series after a sterling pitching effort that kept the Yankees mystified.
Shortstop Derrick Jeter and Left Fielder Johnny Damon have shouldered the Yankees drive for a league record 27th title hitting .381 and .384 respectively.
Not to be outdone standing aside the plate, Philadelphia’s Shane Victorino and Utley have combined for .400 and .333 hitting percentage respectively.
But the Phillies pitching has been its strong point throughout with Cliff Lee’s two gems in two appearances.
If only the Phillies could clone him for tonight's contest.
Who wins tonight?
It’s hard to imagine that the Phillies will roll over and it’s just as hard to imagine that the Yankees will be denied.
Note: If you see Mariano Rivera strolling to the mound in the top of the ninth, the Yankees have prevailed.
