In a vote that stunned the gay rights community again, the people of Maine voted to repeal the same-sex marriage law within their state. Therefore, marriage licenses will not be given to homosexuals and lesbians within the borders of Maine. As of now, 87% of the precincts had reported their votes and the gay marriage foes were winning over the gay marriage supporters 53% to 47%. This vote carries a similar result as last year's Proposition 8 defeat in California. The five states that are left that allow same-sex marriages are Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, and Iowa. However, all of these states have same-sex marriage due to legislation or court rulings, not because of a popular vote. Matter of fact, the banning of same-sex marriages have been approved by popular vote in thirty of the fifty states in the USA.

This vote in Maine had major implications because it was going to show which road the country was going in the area of morality. Many same-sex marriage supporters thought that they would win the vote because Maine had been more tolerant towards same-sex marriages than other states. They had hoped that this vote would open the door for other states to vote same-sex marriages into effect. Fortunately, the door on this closet will remain shut.

What this proves is that the USA is still hanging on to its last shred of morality: the ideal that marriage is defined as a man joining with a woman in matrimony. If you have read Gibbon's 'The Rise and Fall of the Roman Empire,' then you would know that the acceptance of homosexuality by the Romans led to the city of Rome being ransacked by Alaric in the 5th century AD. The reason is that if a country compromises its morality, then it would compromise against the enemy in battle. As the battles rage on in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can now rest assured that compromise will not creep in. I am glad that the people of this nation clearly see that homosexuals and lesbians want same-sex marriages to go into effect solely for the purpose of tax breaks. If they want the same tax breaks as married couples, then they can choose to stop being homosexual and marry someone from the opposite sex. Always remember that homosexuality is a choice because there are too many homosexuals around the world that convert back to heterosexuality. Morality still rules in the USA! If the homosexuals want to get married, then they should move to the Netherlands; that whole country would be underwater if it wasn't for the dikes!

Funny... it didn't seem to hurt the Spartans, or the armies of Alexander.
That's a pretty big book; seems like a waste of space if the whole thing can be summed up so easily (which it can't).

The courage and persistence of the gay and lesbian community in the face of such bigotry and so-called "morality" is nothing less than amazing.
There hard work is paying off, even after setbacks like the one in Maine last night. Old prejudices and fears die hard.

As long as I am in the USA, same-sex marriages will never win the vote in any state.
