The movie that was comprised of footage shot prior to the death of Michael Jackson in June opened to the world on October 28. To date the movie has brought in $101 million from theatres all over the world.

With the popularity of the movie, especially among audiences over 25 who made up some 62% of the moviegoers, Sony is extending the movie's run which was originally scheduled to play for only two weeks. At present Sony will run "This is it" at least through Thanksgiving in the United States and from one to three weeks longer in other parts of the world; Sony will determine the length of the extension on a country by country basis.

Sony paid the Jackson estate $60 million for the rights to the rehearsal footage made by the pop star while getting ready for his "This is it" concert residency in London.
