WASHINGTON, Nov. 1 -- Some 1,600 names per day are recommended for inclusion on the U.S. terrorist watch list, which now numbers 400,000, documents indicate.
Data provided to the Senate Judiciary Committee by the FBI and made public last week showed that during a 12-month period that ended in March, 1,600 names per day were forwarded to the FBI by the U.S. intelligence community based on a "reasonable suspicion," The Washington Post reported Sunday.
The newspaper said the said the controversial list is now up to 400,000 unique names contained in 1 million entries. It reported that fewer than 5 percent of the people on the list are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents, while 9 percent of them are also on the government's "no fly" list.
The Post said FBI officials caution that the recommended names don't "necessarily represent a new individual, but may instead involve an alias or name variant for a previously watch-listed person." Next Story: Search for crash survivors called off or see all U.S. News stories
