All right, let's get one thing straight right up front.
While Bush was president, there were plenty of us on the left comparing him to a certain German dictator. I probably did it myself once or twice in my more callow days.
We were wrong.
Playing the Hitler card, or the Communist card, or the Marxist card, is a little like throwing the first punch in an argument that turns into a fight. All it shows is that you have run out of ideas.
Hitler was so evil, just as Stalin and Mao were so evil, that they go far beyond anything any American president has done or would do.
Editor's note: Even Nixon?
Yes, even Nixon.
Despite the time George W. Bush reportedly called the Constitution "a damned piece of paper" when told something he wanted to do was unconstitutional, I have enough faith in this country to believe we would never elect a megalomaniac who wanted to kill people as our president.
Editor's note: What about Cheney?
I said president, didn't I?
Seriously, though, one of the biggest problems we have these days is that the folks on one side of an argument aren't willing to accept the fact that there even is another side.
If you're opposed to Obama, you must be a fascist.
If you're for Obama, you must be a Commie.
Let's get past all that. My good friend Redhanded101 is fond of using the term "bed-wetting liberal" to describe folks on the left, and I countered by saying if he was going to say that, I would coin the term "pants-crapping conservative."
We ought to agree not to go any further than those two terms, which are pretty pejorative. In fact, we could even shorten them once everyone understands them.
So when you want to call someone a Nazi, or a fascist, or a Limbaugh-lover, or something like that, just think "pants-crapping conservative" and type PCC.
We'll know what you mean.
And if even the thought of Obama or Nancy Pelosi or Rachel Maddow makes you ill, all tyou have to do is think "bed-wetting liberal" and type BWL.
I promise we'll get it.
And think of how much happier we'll be when Nazi only refers to the Third Reich and Commie to the Soviet Union.
