Trail of the endagered snow leopard

According to an editorial of DAWN dated October 30,some politically rich and influential people were on a shooting spree in the protected Machiara National Park of Azad Kashmir recently but no one had the courage to stop them as one of them was the son-in-law of a top government official of Azad Kashmir whereas another was was the brother-in-law of the same official. It must be reminded ,that the above mentioned park is sponsored by Global Environment Facility. The Machiara National Park is protected under national and international law. This park, has shelterd musk deer ,ibex, horned tragopan, and the snow leopard as well. The local community that takes part in the protection of the national treasure and have renounced hunting there, were outraged when they heard gunshots throughout that day.The MNP project officials also confirmed the incident. With so much power and money involved it is doubted if the people concerned will be caught and punished.

Two year a similar incident took place in the Kirthar National Park in the Sindh province when influential,political-cum tribal men went on a hunting spree and were let off after they paid a nominal fine.

Besides, protected falcons are trapped in the Baluchistan province and fresh water turtles are caught in Sindh and Frontier region.

During the winter seasons permits are given to Arab dignitaries to come and hunt the endangered migratory houbura bustard
.

It is a very sad state of affairs. What is the government doing about this serious matter?

That is so sad and so disappointing. These people obviously have no respect for nature and wildlife. How can they do something so destructive just for their own enjoyment? Hopefully they pay some consequences. So many species are already on the verge of extinction. We don't need goons like this fueling the fire.

Thanks for your comments. They are heartless people.Imagine the migratory birds who come here in winter from across Siberia in search of warmer climate are also hunted down. These birds are endangered but these ruthless men just hunt them down and the authorities let them off with just a nominal fine.

That's true in Pakistan, but remember what happened in Iraq when America attacked Saddam, all the zoo animals were being kept in the compound in
the back of Saddam's offices by one of his sons for apparently shooting for food, they were all returned to the zoo. Remember also what happened
in Croatia, after Miloshevic and Karadzic ordered the mass murders of the
people, genocide. The Serbian military were across the river Drave from Osijek which is Croatia, my hometown where I lived before migrating to Australia 10 years of age. The zoo was the place right across from Pampas where I used to always go after school for walks with grandpa. White cable boat from Pampas used to cris cross Drava for
the zoo. The Serbs were attacking Osijek by firing their guns and rockets at the people of Osijek. When the Serbs were hungry, they shot
the animals in their cages, wild boars, wild horses, zebras and so on and cooked them over the open fire. There were even buffaloes in their
compounds all killed and eaten. The Croatians had to stop the Serbs from destroying a national treasure, namely the zoo. They went to their
houses and brought out their old hunting rifles, rook guns with lot of
ancient ammunition from their army days of fighting the Nazis, and with
their ancient weapons being fired across the river they stopped the Serbs of Slobodan Miloshevic and Radovan Karaszic who is known as the butcher of Bosnia. My suggestion is the people should make that kind of an uprising and stop these butchers the same way. 9/11/2009.
