Pat Robertson: Hate Crime Laws Are Anti-Christian

Pat Robertson, among other organizations and corporations, is the founder and Chairman of the Christian Broadcast Network. After President Obama signed into law an expansion of hate crime to now cover crimes against homosexuals, Pat had this to say…

“The noose has tightened around the necks of Christians.”

And

“What about a law that says it’s a federal crime to attack somebody because of his religious beliefs?”

Well Pat, hate crime laws cover people who attack people for that too. In fact something like that, I think, is in the Constitution.

And the noose has tightened around the necks of Christians because now it’s a crime to physically assault someone for being gay?

Really. Do you really want to take that stance?

Your religious rights are being trampled on because you can’t assault or murder gays?

Well according to Robertson, he’s worried that if someone gives a sermon about what the Bible says about homosexuals and sodomy, and then a person listening to that sermon leaves the church and kills a homo, is the government going to track down the person giving the sermon and prosecute them as well as the person who actually assaulted the gay person.

Well Pat, no that won’t happen. Hasn’t happened yet, won’t happen in the future, unless of course hate speech become federally illegal as well.

You see the freedom of speech and religion, granted to you by the Constitution would protect you from that. The Constitution trumps the hate crime law.

Mike Pence, Republican Congressman from Indiana, has also echoed the concerns of Robertson. He along with all the other critics of the hate crime law are spinning the situation to mean that the freedom of speech is under attack by implementing this law.

This agreement with Robertson isn’t a surprise coming from Pence, whose Twitter bio says “Christian, Conservative, Republican, in that order - House GOP Conference Chair, Congressman for IN-06”.

I don’t think I like someone being in a government office that says they are a Christian above being a Republican. Religion before civic duty…interesting…wonder what Jefferson would say about that.

I wonder how a Christian like Pence would feel if a Muslim Congressman wrote in their Bio “I’m a Muslim, American and Democrat…in that order”?

I don’t have to wonder, I’ve heard people like Robertson already say how they feel about Muslims in government.

In a sense free speech is limited by hate crime law. If you are gonna beat up and kill a gay person in America, you better not use any homophobic rhetoric while you’re doing it.

Boy, those Christian conservatives sure loved having the right to spew homosexual slurs while killing gay people. To bad now they can get extra time in prison for doing that. God how they miss the good ole days.

Hate crime laws prosecute people that have committed "OFFENSES INVOLVING ACTUAL OR PERCEIVED RELIGION, NATIONAL ORIGIN, GENDER, SEXUAL ORIENTATION, GENDER IDENTITY, OR DISABILITY”.

Typical over reaction. They have misinterpreted the law. The hate crimes law protects those that are physically hurt because of gender, race, sexual orientation, religion, or disability.

Great post. It is confusing to me why Christians are so adamantly against things like gay marriage. Marriage isn't a religious practice; people just choose to make it one. And I think in 50 years, we'll look back at this controversy in the same way we look back at women not having the right to vote until 1920. It just doesn't make sense to treat homosexuals as second class citizens.
