This is a new project that was launched last week at Society for Neuroscience's annual meeting. The meeting took place in Chicago, Illinois. The Whole Brain Catalog was developed at UC San Diego as a community resource by the Waitt Family Foundation. It is completely free and open source and provides a multiscale environment of the mouse brain, enabling researchers to zoom in, out, and around brain regions, 2D and 3D microscopic images, cell morphologies, and neuron simulations. It is built on top of JMonkey Engine, a 3D game engine that allows real-time rendering and interaction with 2D and 3D multiscale data.
