For what appears to be the first time in history, Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad publicly announced the Islamic republic’s willingness to cooperate with the Western world. What initially started as a hostile confrontation has slowly transformed into cooperation according to Ahmadinejad in a recent speech made to Iranian citizens. The president claims that his change in attitude and approach came about when he saw the strategy and tactics of the Western powers altered to a more give and take mentality.
This fond, new Ahmadinejad comes to light after Western powers made public that they were willing to cooperate with Iran on certain matters pertaining to their stockpile of uranium in what many see as an inevitable building of nuclear weapons in the republic. As both sides begin to work on a new draft proposal for their nuclear program, the Iranian President called this meeting of nations a victory for all of Iran.
The question that has to be raised in this situation is whether or not the program that will eventually come into existence will be followed or overlooked moving forward. It’s easy to say one thing and completely do something different as Iran as a history of doing. It will also be interesting to see how the eventually proposal will be regulated. Will Iran be willing to let UN Security representatives into factories to make sure the laws of the proposal aren’t being broken or will their pride get in the way? However, for the time being as the Iranian President said, this is a clear victory for all parties involved and hopefully negotiations and talks will continue to be productive moving forward.
